Tricks and Tips...

Horse Toys?

All of us have bought toys to entertain our horses.  There is nothing more frustrating than purchasing a $30 toy, only to see it destroyed within the first week - and these toys are supposed to be indestructible!  I've brought home a horse ball once, gave it to my Friesian and watched her promptly step on it and pop it!

Here are some tips that I've found to be cost effective and fun for the horses.  The first is a website called Boomer Balls.  This is a site that originally supplied toys to zoo animals like bears and lions.  I've purchased the small bobbin, $35, and have had it for over two years!  What makes it especially nice is that I can easily wash it.  Every month I take it from one horse, wash it in a bleach solution and toss it in the next pen.

I've also stumbled across a toy that all of my horses seem to love.  I had a bowling ball sitting around taking up space, and on a whim, threw it (okay, I tried to bowl down the salt block) in one of the pens.  The horses really seem to enjoy this!  One word of caution - they do crack after a while, so you need to keep an eye on it.  Most bowling alleys have house balls they need to dispose of, or you can post an ad asking for old balls.  Make sure you clean the ball thoroughly before giving it to your horse.

I hope these tips help!
